The Maltese Association of Psychiatry together with Sedqa, OASI and Caritas have issued a press release urging authorities to consider all the possible consequences should legalisation of Recreational Cannabis Use go ahead.
The Associations urge for more empathy and less stigma towards cannabis and other substance users. Decriminalisation of personal use of cannabis is encouraged, providing a rehabilitative rather than a punitive approach.
Legalisation on the other hand can give out a false message that cannabis is a “safe” drug and this may lead to normalising its recreational use with higher risks of repercussions.
The Associations urge lawmakers to keep the well-being of the Maltese society and our childrens’ futures in mind.
