Statement Release: Condemning Discrimination, Promoting Parity in Health

The Maltese Association of Psychiatry (MAP) would like to reiterate our vision of Parity in Health, where mental health is treated and regarded on the same level as physical health. Policy makers and other relevant authorities should be vigilant to never discriminate between the two and this Parity should be portrayed at all levels of service development and delivery, from discussion to implementation.

The MAP strongly condemns any discriminatory comments that portray mental health services -including mental health service users and mental health professionals- as a burden on health services in general. It is by ignoring mental health disorders and by delaying the provision of timely access to care, adequate premises and modern treatment options that mental health disorders then become stigmatised, and are perceived as a burden on our society, on our economy and most importantly on the individuals and families seeking help and understanding.

The MAP believes that collaboration is what is necessary, now more than ever, to bridge gaps and improve mental health for all.
